California Supplemental Examination (CSE)
NOTE: Candidates must complete all divisions of the ARE before eligibility for the CSE.
After you have passed the ARE, you must take the California Supplemental Examination (CSE) for licensure in California. The CSE ensures that candidates can demonstrate minimum standards of competency and necessary architectural knowledge and skills to respond to the unique requirements and conditions in California.
The CSE is a computer-delivered, multiple-choice examination. Candidates are required to demonstrate entry-level competence in the areas outlined in the CSE Test Plan.
The Board’s regulations allow one test attempt per application. Candidates must submit a new application and payment to the Board to retake the CSE. Candidates can reschedule an examination 90 or more days after an unsuccessful attempt.
CSE Test Plan
The CSE Test Plan is developed using the results of a periodic statewide survey of architectural practice in California.
Examination Security and Confidentiality
The ARE (NCARB’s Exam) and CSE (Board’s Exam) are created under strict security and held in confidence.
